Tuka
Tuka's "real" name is Matuka, but that's turned out to be too much of a mouthful so it got shortened. Of course, we use all sorts of endearments too: Tukes, Tukapup, Sweetiepup, Monster, and Miss T are the most common ones. "Velcro puppy" is reserved for the times when there's thunder and lightning, probably the only things that scare her.

Tuka was born July 1, 1994, in Maggie's first litter. Her father Bowser was half Border Collie so she has some of those traits. This was Maggie's only part-blood litter. Overall, she's taller and not as stocky as a pure bred Blue Heeler and has a beautiful coat that's a mixture of blue merle with sold black patches. When she was 14 weeks old Tuka had the bad luck to tangle with the front wheel of our car. She had massive injuries, including a broken front tooth, the ligaments that attach the liver to the diaphragm were torn, the diaphragm was stretched and almost all her other internal organs were badly battered and bruised. By far the worst damage was to her back right leg. From the knee down the bones were completely shattered. There wasn't a piece of bone bigger than ¼ inch square. For two days, we didn't know if she was even going to live. Thanks to Dr. Mark Lang and her own fighting spirit, she not only survived, she's fully recovered. Once she was released from the hospital, it was nearly impossible to follow the Dr. Mark's orders about keeping her quiet so she could get better. She still has wires in that leg and the bones are all bumpy where they've healed. We do notice that it bothers her a bit more with each year that passes and we try to set limits on the amount of running and jumping she does.

Until Tuka was about 2 ½, we had serious doubts about whether she would ever settle down. In those days, we called her our Terrorist. Now, she's the best dog we could ever imagine having. She doesn't need any discipline from us at all. She still runs like a mad thing, plays until WE'RE ready to drop and never gives up on anything. She's smart as a whip, obsessive about chasing sticks and balls, gentle with our cats and definitely "boss dog" over our other dog Tandra. We cannot imagine life without her. S&D
